The second wine, the 2009 Le Petit Mouton, is the finest second wine they have ever made. Aromas of black currants, flowers, mocha, and earth jump from the glass of this fleshy, heady, full-bodied wine. The final blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, and the alcohol level is slightly higher than the Mouton's. It should drink well for 15+ years. (Tasted once.)
Fleshy and inviting, with dense but accessible layers of dark fig, plum, prune cake and roasted espresso, all framed on the finish by a lingering singed cedar edge. This has grip, but it's still approachable now. Drink now through 2020. -JM
89-91 Barrel sample. Very spicy fruit, with lots of blackcurrant character, very fresh with light tannins. There is a streak of ginger right through the wine, finishing with lively acidity.
Aromas of smoke, bacon and ripe fruits, follow through to a full body, with lots of blackberries and bramble berries. Velvety tannins, with lovely intensity and balance. Gorgeous wine. Second wine of Mouton-Rothschild. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon. 22% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc.
The astounding quality of Mouton-Rothschild was recognised in 1973 when it was upgraded to first growth status. Every vintage has a label design from a different artist, such as Picasso and Warhol. Their soil is arguably the best in Pauillac and some of their vines are a century old.
